Stay Gold
“Stay Gold, Ponyboy. Stay Gold…” These were the last words of Johnny, in the book The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton. A man Named Robert Frost invented the saying “nothing Gold can stay”. This means that no one is going to be able to stay innocent. In this case, Johnny was telling Ponyboy to stay innocent and don’t get into anymore trouble.
"Nature's first green is gold, her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, so dawn goes down today. Nothing gold can stay." this Is the famous poem of Robert Frost. This poem means, "Don’t lose your Innocents, because it only stays for an hour." Johnny is trying to say that Ponyboy is innocent, and that he should stay innocent. It also means that he wants Ponyboy to get the Socs to realize that not all the greasers are bad and to be true to himself.
Another Interesting thing that I thought about what Johnny said was that it showed that he really wanted to let Ponyboy know that he actually cared about him. He wanted Ponyboy to have a good rest of his life, and keep it the way it is, and to stay innocent. The theme of this grand poem is Loss of Innocents. Johnny is telling Ponyboy that he is doing a great job in his life and that he should keep his innocents for as long as he can, and to never put your head down. He should keep striving to be the best man he could possibly be.
